ACT - Kansas College Career Readiness - Class of 2010

In the recent ACT report on The Condition of College & Career Readiness - Class 2010 for Kansas, successes and opportunities can be found in the direction of our Business, Marketing and Management programs.  Successes are found in how well Kansas students perform based on national averages.  Opportunities can be found in Job openings and students’ interests don’t coincide (p. 10).

Figure 1: ACT - Career Readiness - KS
Though job openings specific to our cause are expected for Kansas, our 2010 students' disposition shows a large lack of interest in those fields (Figure 1).  This serves as a reminder that awareness is a critical element for development.  Working together we will be able to not only spread the word, but build excitement in our students.

Great opportunities are abound for great Kansas students.

Competencies for Business Management (12052)

If you are interested in developing the Business Entrepreneurship and Management pathway within the Business Management and Administration cluster, please take a moment to review the competencies for Business Management (12052). Click Here

Business Management is a required .5 credit course within the Business Entrepreneurship and Management pathway. There are eight pages to this document. The first two pages are the evaluation/assessment form. On the remaining pages, you will find more details on competencies with suggested outcomes.

I want to thank those who have assisted in the drafting of these competencies. We are still needing more constructive feedback. Here is what we are needing:

1. Clarity – Do they make sense?
2. Flexibility – Competencies should be prescribed (for assessing), but broad enough to give educators curriculum autonomy. Can you make the class your own?
3. Timely – Can the competencies be accomplished within the .5 units/credits? More/Less?
4. Opinion – What do you want to accomplish with this class? Are we on target?

On August 31, 2010, I will be meeting with business and industry to discuss this pathway. To prepare, we will be drafting competencies for the Applied Business Development (12099) course. If you have taught either Advance Entrepreneurship or Advance Management, I would appreciate reviewing your course outcomes/syllabus.

Thank you....

A huge thanks to all who participated on Wednesday and Thursday. Its always a challenge to have a group of educators together, business teachers are no exception---we all have opinions and want them heard!

One thing I continue to remind myself, if each of us didn't have passion for what we do, the process of developing the pathway would be simple---but it would be rather sad.

Our passion drives our discussion and while very spirited at times, the freshing thing is that as a group, we are willing to meet in the summer and work through these issues---the spirited discussion is a product of the passion you have for what you do---that is very exciting and encouraging for our profession and Kansas students!

Again, thank you for your dedication and commitment to Kansas schools.

Technical Level Courses

Ideas of classes that might be added at the Technical Level.

SCED Document (Full Version)

Take a look at Common Course Codes and Courses Identified in the SCED.

Someone asked about a situation like Business Essentials, which is not listed in the SCED document. Kansas has been one of the early adopters of the SCED system, as we developed courses last year, those courses, course codes (identified on the competency profile) and course description (also on comp profile) have been adopted by SCED---Robin Harris worked collaboratively with them during our development/adoption process.

Since that time, SCED has not released a new document---but the work has been completed for those courses.

Career Cluster Model - SECONDARY

This is the latest version of the Career Clusters Model for the secondary-level.

Business is the purple group---considered a Field.

Business Management and Administration is the Cluster.
